This #TechTuesday meet Courtney Vance. She recently completed orientation and now that she’s settled on shift, we’d like to share a bit more about her.
I was hired at GSCEMS back In October 2020. I have 2 cats and hope to gain more fur babies when I finish paramedic school in the fall. I never would have thought I would be in this job field but I’m glad I found my way here!
1)Where are you originally from?
Williamstown, KY
2) What are your hobbies, interests, etc?
I enjoy reading fiction/fantasy, I love going to the movies, kayaking and camping, and have recently started getting back into the gym.
3) How did you become interested/get started in EMS?
I definitely just fell into it. A friend told me about a job opening where they work, but I had to be an EMT to apply. I spoke with a fire department and asked to ride the ambulance to see if I would be interested in EMS. The assistant chief talked me into becoming a volunteer there and I spent 3 years there as volunteer FF/EMT.
4) What brought you to Georgetown?
I kept hearing great things about Georgetown and GSCEMS! The training and experience I would gain while working there would be unparalleled.
5) What is your position at GSCEMS?
Full time EMT on 3rd Platoon with Paramedic Mackenzie Swatsler.
6) What is your favorite thing about EMS/your job?
The variety. While some things are pretty routine, like morning truck checks and chores, the calls we respond to can be anything, and that can make a 24 hour shift go by really quick!
7) What is one thing currently that you would change about EMS as a whole?
More community involvement. I think being active in the community we serve is vital for EMS. It allows the public to see who will be coming to them in their time of need. It also gives EMS an opportunity to educate the public on safety tips and prevention of injury/illness, which is just as important as responding to 911 calls.
8) What is one place in Scott County that you would take a visitor?
The Chinese buffet off of Lawson Drive! Chinese food is one of my basic food groups and that buffet has never disappointed me. I recently ordered take out from there for the first time and there was enough food for 3 meals plus it was delicious!
